4-H Livestock Groups

Available Livestock Information for Giles Youth

Poultry Project

Are you ready to learn more about beef cattle and the beef cattle industry? In this project you will learn about breeds, production, selection, grooming, nutrition, management, and more! You will also gain skills that you will use in other areas of your life such as decision making, communicating with others and being an effective leader.

Youth will get the chance to compete in Livestock Judging and show in the Beef Show at the state Here’s the Beef Festival.

Giles County Chick Chain (Poultry Project) offers youth the chance to raise their own backyard flock per project guidelines.

  • 4-H’ers sign up & order 12 (1 breed) or 24 (12 of each breed). They usually arrive in April. Youth will take them home and raise them until the 4-H Poultry Show & Sale at the “Here’s the Beef Festival” in September.
  • 4-H’ers bring 3 of each breed of birds to the show and sale. A judge will determine the Grand and Reserve Champions for each breed. The birds will then be auctioned with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding the next year’s 4-H Chick Chain Project. The remainder of the birds are the 4-H’ers to keep.
  • A $40.00 deposit is required for participation and will be completely refunded upon the returning of the 3 birds of each breed to the show & sale. If not, the $40.00 deposit will be forfeited and the 4-H’er will be responsible for paying the difference between the $40.00 deposit and the average price of the birds at the show and sale.
  • This project is limited to 30 paid/approved participants. First come, first served. All others will be placed on the waiting list.
  • Sign up may be made at the following link: CLOSED until November 2023.
  • Payment must be made in full online at payment link closed until November 2023.

Through sheep projects youth will learn about selection and evaluation, nutrition and feeding, health and daily care, reproduction, marketing, and much more.  Youth learn to accept responsibility, to value hard work, think critically, make decisions, and communicate.

Youth have opportunities to show their sheep at various expo’s during each calendar year.
