> Small Farms Program

The Small Farms Program of Giles County is designed to enhance quality of life and management skills for minority, limited-resource, and small farm producers. Teaching methods used to meet the need of small farmers include: farm visits, field days, office visits, newsletters, the media, and on-farm demonstrations.

Ensuring the long-term economic viability and sustainability of agriculture production on family farms is of focus for limited-resource farmers.
The Small Farms Program covers the following areas:

- Risk Management
- Record Keeping
- Goat Production
- Vetetable Production
- USDA Programs

The Giles County Extension Service provides programs and information on a wide variety of agricultural related enterprises. Several publications are available at the office which provide specific information and instruction on these enterprises.

Other services are also available to assist farmers and homeowners. Soil testing, pond analysis, and forage testing are examples. Farm financial planning and management is also available in a one-on-one consultation. A Distant Diagnostic Lab is available for farmers and homeowners who need immediate identification of insects, weeds, or potetial diseases.

Several programs on specific agricultural commodities have been targeted through 2004. These areas of emphasis were determined by the use of advisory groups, county statistics and other needs assessment. The performance goals for Giles Conty Agricultual Production are as follows:

1) Beef producers will utilize a county Beef Marketing Alliance to improve production, management, and marketing

2) Beef producers to utilize Beef Quality Assurance-Certification Program in their operation to improve herd health and carcass quality.

3) Agricultural producers will adopt sound waste management practices

4) Agricultural producers will consider management as it pertains to precision farming

5) Agricultural producers will increase and/or improve marketing strategies/economical analysis

6) Agricultural producers will adopt recommended practices in field and forage crops, tobacco production, corn, soybeans, cotton, and small grains

7) Agricultural producers will improve soil fertility management

8) Timber producers to adopt BMPs in silverculture and in harvesting to improve production and water quality
 
> The MANAGE Program

MANAGE was designed specifically to help Tennessee farm families evaluate their individual situation and assist them in improving their quality of life. Individualized farm and financial planning assistance is a major component of the program. In addition, farm families can also obtain information on computer applications to agriculture, computer record keeping, marketing, lease and rental arrangements, produciton records, new enterprises, and much more. Workshops and other educational programs are also offered to help farm families improve marketing, record keeping, strategic planning, and enterprise budgeting skills.
